02: The Moulin Rouge

Curtain Call at The Moulin Rouge.

Red is associated with passion, lust and anger...the depth and richness of this colour not only brings to mind decadence, indulgance and extravagance, it also seems molecular. The patterns in the glaze are like blood cells under a microscope. It’s an embodiment of living, a reminder to enjoy life and have fun, yet it’s produced from raw materials dug from the earth. At a retreat some years ago I came across a beautiful statue of Buddhist Deity Kurukullā, looking at this picture that was taken straight from the kiln, I feel the same spiritual idea is somehow captured within it.
